By Zagreb, 09. ožujka 2025. – Seksualno zlostavljanje u vjerskim institucijama ostavlja duboke posljedice ne samo na žrtve, već i na širu zajednicu, upozorila je govornica Dorothy na nedavnoj međunarodnoj konferenciji “Vjera i rasuđivanje”. U svom govoru, dodatno je istaknula da osim primarnih žrtava, među “kolateralnim” žrtvama su i vjernici te svećenici koji su vjerovali počiniteljima.
Mnogi od njih, umjesto da osude zlostavljače, prebacuju odgovornost na same žrtve kako bi očuvali vlastitu duhovnu stabilnost i nastavili sudjelovati u vjerskom životu. Ovakav obrazac ponašanja, smatra Dorothy, pokazuje kako zataškavanje ovih zločina stvara humanitarnu krizu – umjesto podrške, žrtve se suočavaju s novim traumama.
Gubitak povjerenja i prisilna kontrola
Dorothy ističe kako je pitanje seksualnog zlostavljanja i njegovog sustavnog prikrivanja dovelo do masovnog gubitka povjerenja u Crkvu. Mnogi vjernici napustili su instituciju, nesposobni pomiriti se s činjenicom da su takva djela desetljećima skrivana. Upozorava i na prisilnu kontrolu koja se u religijskom kontekstu ponekad provodi nad vjernicima, primjerice kroz strah od vječnog prokletstva ako napuste Crkvu.
Potreba za reformom i transparentnošću
U svom obraćanju, Dorothy dijeli osobno iskustvo udaljavanja od Crkve kako bi se oporavila od traume. Ističe da je u tom procesu imala sreću pronaći svećenika tradicionalne latinske liturgije koji joj je pružio razumijevanje i podršku bez osude.
Smatra da je nemoguće potpuno eliminirati predatore iz vjerskih institucija, ali je moguće stvoriti sustav u kojem će biti odgovorni za svoja djela. Traži veću transparentnost, pravne posljedice za zlostavljače i njihovo trajno uklanjanje iz svećeničke službe. Time bi se ne samo zaštitile žrtve, već i očuvali časni svećenici i vjerničke zajednice.
Dorothy završava svoje pismo podsjećajući kako je pravda nužna ne samo zbog izravnih žrtava, već i zbog budućnosti same vjerske zajednice.
Poziv međunarodnim institucijama na hitnu reakciju
Zaključci međunarodne i međureligijske konferencije “Vjera i rasuđivanje”, održane u Zagrebu, poslani su na adrese brojnih međunarodnih institucija, uključujući UNICEF, Ujedinjene narode u Ženevi, Svjetsku zdravstvenu organizaciju i Svjetski savez crkava. Organizatori su uputili apel ovim organizacijama da se aktivno uključe u rješavanje problema seksualnog zlostavljanja u vjerskim institucijama, što smatraju njihovom moralnom i institucionalnom obavezom.
Ukazivanje na odgovornost vjerskih institucija
U zaključcima konferencije istaknuta je potreba za većom transparentnošću i pravnim sankcijama prema počiniteljima. Sudionici su upozorili na zabrinjavajuću činjenicu da vjerske institucije koje su duboko ogrezle u organiziranu pedofiliju i dalje neometano uživaju u privilegijama, dok istovremeno zanemaruju žrtve i negiraju odgovornost. Posebno je ukazano na slučaj Srpske pravoslavne crkve (SPC), koja, unatoč brojnim optužbama i dokazima o sistemskom zataškavanju zlostavljanja, i dalje djeluje bez ikakvih posljedica.
Međunarodna intervencija kao nužnost
Sudionici konferencije složili su se da se borba protiv seksualnog zlostavljanja ne može prepustiti samo pojedinačnim državama ili vjerskim zajednicama, već zahtijeva široku međunarodnu suradnju. Poseban naglasak stavljen je na nužnost uvođenja univerzalnih mehanizama nadzora i prijave slučajeva zlostavljanja, uz osiguravanje podrške i pravne zaštite žrtvama.
Organizatori su apelirali na međunarodne organizacije da iskoriste svoj utjecaj i prisile institucije poput SPC-a da preuzmu odgovornost, provedu reforme i osiguraju pravdu za žrtve. Smatraju da pasivnost međunarodne zajednice samo produbljuje problem i omogućava daljnje zataškavanje zločina.
Budući koraci
Konferencija je zaključila da će se nastaviti s pritiscima na međunarodne institucije i vjerske zajednice kako bi se osiguralo da odgovorni snose posljedice. Također, planirano je formiranje međunarodnog nadzornog tijela koje bi pratilo postupanje vjerskih institucija u slučajevima seksualnog zlostavljanja.
Ostaje za vidjeti hoće li međunarodne organizacije prepoznati ozbiljnost problema i poduzeti konkretne korake kako bi zaštitile najranjivije članove društva.
SEXUAL ABUSE IN RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES: THE NEED FOR TRANSPARENCY AND JUSTICE
Zagreb, March 9, 2025 – Sexual abuse within religious institutions leaves deep consequences not only for the victims but also for the wider community, speaker Dorothy warned at the recent international conference “Faith and Reasoning.” In her speech, she emphasized that, besides the primary victims, the “collateral” victims also include believers and priests who trusted the perpetrators.
Many of them, instead of condemning the abusers, shift the blame onto the victims themselves to preserve their own spiritual stability and continue participating in religious life. Dorothy believes this pattern of behavior demonstrates how covering up these crimes creates a humanitarian crisis—rather than receiving support, victims face new traumas.
Loss of Trust and Coercive Control
Dorothy highlights how the issue of sexual abuse and its systematic cover-up has led to a massive loss of trust in the Church. Many believers have abandoned the institution, unable to reconcile with the fact that such acts were hidden for decades. She also warns of coercive control sometimes exercised in a religious context, such as instilling fear of eternal damnation for those who leave the Church.
The Need for Reform and Transparency
In her address, Dorothy shared her personal experience of distancing herself from the Church to recover from trauma. She noted that she was fortunate to find a priest from the traditional Latin liturgy who provided understanding and support without judgment.
She believes that while it may be impossible to completely eliminate predators from religious institutions, it is possible to create a system in which they are held accountable for their actions. She calls for greater transparency, legal consequences for abusers, and their permanent removal from priestly service. This would not only protect victims but also safeguard honorable priests and religious communities.
Dorothy concludes her speech by reminding that justice is necessary not only for the direct victims but also for the future of the religious community itself.
Call for Urgent Action from International Institutions
The conclusions of the international and interfaith conference “Faith and Reasoning,” held in Zagreb, have been sent to numerous international institutions, including UNICEF, the United Nations in Geneva, the World Health Organization, and the World Council of Churches. The organizers urged these organizations to actively engage in addressing the issue of sexual abuse in religious institutions, which they consider a moral and institutional obligation.
Highlighting the Responsibility of Religious Institutions
The conference conclusions emphasized the need for greater transparency and legal sanctions against perpetrators. Participants warned of the alarming fact that religious institutions deeply entrenched in organized pedophilia continue to enjoy privileges while simultaneously neglecting victims and denying responsibility.
Special attention was drawn to the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC), which, despite numerous accusations and evidence of systemic cover-ups of abuse, continues to operate without any consequences.
International Intervention as a Necessity
Conference participants agreed that the fight against sexual abuse cannot be left solely to individual states or religious communities but requires broad international cooperation. Particular emphasis was placed on the need to introduce universal mechanisms for monitoring and reporting cases of abuse, along with ensuring support and legal protection for victims.
The organizers urged international organizations to use their influence to pressure institutions such as the SPC to take responsibility, implement reforms, and ensure justice for victims. They believe that the passivity of the international community only deepens the problem and enables the continued cover-up of these crimes.
Next Steps
The conference concluded that pressure on international institutions and religious communities must continue to ensure that those responsible face consequences. Additionally, plans are underway to establish an international oversight body to monitor the actions of religious institutions in cases of sexual abuse.
It remains to be seen whether international organizations will recognize the seriousness of the problem and take concrete steps to protect the most vulnerable members of society.
